Outreach
Period Covered – December 1, 2008 through November 30, 2008
BroadSouth Communications, Inc. has maintained a pro-active approach towards the spirit of expanding job opportunities in the field of broadcasting for many years prior to the latest Equal Employment Opportunity Commission regulation that became effective March 10, 2003. James M. Reynolds, President of BroadSouth and General Manager of stations WDXX and WHBB is directly and personally involved in the company’s “Outreach” effort.
From January 1999 to present, Reynolds has served on the Governor’s State Workforce Investment Board which funds and directs agencies specializing in job training and career advancement. This position is voluntary. On an annual basis, BroadSouth Communications, Inc. airs a minimum of 500 no charge on air announcements promoting the employment resources available through the Alabama Career Center System which is directly funded by the WorkForce Board. In addition, Reynolds serves on the WorkForce Regional Advisory Council which is designed to bring Economic Developers, Employers, Job Developers and State Employment Service agencies together.
February through March of 2009, WDXX and WHBB conducted their annual search to fill ten part-time positions to serve as station ambassadors for promotional events for a one year period. On air announcements and letters to area school administrators were used to notify the community of the solicitation effort. Area high school females are solicited to serve as “Dixie Girls” and their duty is to work promotional events and live broadcast remotes and be given the opportunity to learn about the broadcast industry. The candidates are chosen based on having at least a “B” academic grade point average, having a good personality and a desire to learn broadcasting. All successful candidates are paid minimum wage for the hours that they work. In 2009, there were 18 applicants of which ten were chosen. Promotions Director Carolyn S. Rowell is responsible for implementation and supervision of the “Dixie Girl” program.
